It seems that debit cards are fast becoming the choice type of credit to use these days, but they have certain pitfalls that you will want to avoid if at all possible. We have a list of some things to remember so you will not run into any trouble.

1. Do not use debit cards for gas purchases. Many times banks will hold these charges for up to three days. Many people than think they have more money than they actually do and they can overdrawn their account and get hit with big fees.

2. Do not book hotels or car rentals as well with a debit card as banks tend to hold these as well. Make sure they clear before spending money in your account so you avoid late fees.

3. Always know your balance. As consumers we tend to think we have more money or we made a mistake and that bank is always right. What happens usually is a charge has not come in and if you spend it you may get hit with late fees.

The best thing about debit cards is always make sure you know the balance that way you will not get hit with late fees and you will always know where you stand with your account.
